How do you change the thermostat on a 1998 vw jetta TDI?

Where is the thermostat located and can you change it from the top without going under the car?

The thermostat is located at the lower Rad hose on VW's. No you can not get it from the top. You have to first drain the system and then it is tricky because the housing is behind the A/C compressor.

The larger question is why change it? If you have an overheating problem, better to take it to a trusted professional.
