How do I change the thermostat in my 2000 Pontiac Bonneville?

3.8L Engine



1.



Remove the engine appearance cover.

2.



Drain the cooling system.

3.



Loosen and move the inlet radiator hose clamp at the thermostat housing.

4.



Remove the inlet hose from the housing.

5.



Remove the thermostat housing bolts.

6.



Remove the thermostat housing.

7.



Remove the thermostat.

8.



Clean the gasket mating surfaces and the housing and intake port.



To install:



1.



Install the thermostat.

2.



Install the thermostat housing and a new gasket.

3.



Install the thermostat housing bolts and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

4.



Install the inlet radiator hose and clamp.

5.



Refill the cooling system.

6.



Install the engine cover.









4.6L Engines



1.



Drain the cooling system.

2.



Partially drain the cooling system.

3.



Remove the air cleaner assembly.

4.



Remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.

5.



Remove the bolts securing the thermostat housing to the water pump inlet.

6.



Remove the thermostat and the gasket from the water pump housing.



To install:



1.



Install the thermostat and a new gasket into the water pump housing.

2.



Install the thermostat housing.

3.



Install the thermostat housing bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

4.



Connect the radiator outlet hose to the thermostat housing.

5.



Install the air cleaner assembly.

6.



Fill the cooling system.

Take the thermostat housing bolt out. Lift the housing. remove the old thermostat and seal. Install the new thermostat and seal. Replace the housing. Tighten the thermostat housing bolt. Top off the coolant.
