Can you change the thermostat in a 97 Suburu Outback without removing the waterpump first?

If anyone can provide a step by step guide or link for one that would help so much!

There is no water pump removal for changing the thermostat,it is mounted on the water pump but accessible from underneath the car.Just remove 2 bolts and lower radiator hose attached to thermostat housing,in front driver side of the car.

follow lower rad hose to engine. remove two bolts holding thermostat housing (part hose goes onto). wiggle housing loose, coolant will pour out (make sure engine is cold) and thermostat is right there. usually falls right out with coolant. then, as they say, installation is the reverse of removal.
SURE IF IT 2.5L

If this is the 2.5 liter engine it is located where the lower radiator hose bolts to engine not at the top of the engine manifold, spring goes towards engine.
