How do I change the thermostat on a 1995 oldsmobile achieva?

Drain off some coolant and locate where the thermostat housing is. All GM motors have the thermostat before the upper rad hose. Depending what type of motor you have, you have to access this housing. Most likely you have a 3.1L motor that requires some exhaust disassembly of lots of swivel sockets to access the right bolts to get the housing off and on. The thermostat housing is on the drivers side of the motor at the rear of the intake. I would suggest that if you have never done this, get someone with experience to help you or pay someone to do it.

Trace the top radiator hose to an aluminun looking housing and when ya get it off under there is the thermostat. What is it doing? Overheating or not getting hot? I believe around that year the htr. control unit could go bad if it has a thermometer for setting the temp. The one in the dash, that is.I have seen these go badAlso , if you start your car when its cold with the radiator cap off and let it run till it reaches 190-210 degrees the thermostat will open and if the fluid level drop down below the radiator hose you just need to add some antifreeze..Hope this helps
