I got a heat pump and when i turn A/C on the heat strips run at the same time,i changed thermostat,no diff?

Chances are you got some wires crossed. We can address that relay problem that all these %26quot;pros%26quot; are talking about later. For now let's keep it sim[ple and address the most likely problem which is homeowner error.

Be honest. Did this problem just suddenly occur or did it start after you messed around with the thermostat?

Take the thermostat cover off and touch the red wire to the yellow and see if this still happens. This should energize your AC mode only outside. Then disconnect shortly after wards.

Now go to the furnace turn off the %26quot;light%26quot; switch on the side to kill all power. Go back to the thermostat and jumper the green, yellow, and red. Now go turn the switch back to ON at the furnace....sit and listen....your indoor blower should come on and the AC should start outside (might be a slight delay).

If these are the only wires jumped together at the thermostat and your AC is working alone then you obviously have miswired something.

These wire colors are generally the colors used. In other words jumping RC, G, and Y.....should get your air conditioner going. That is if everything is wired correctly from that point to the rest of the controls. These terminal designations are also kind of generic. Who knows what kind you bought and what they are using for terminal designations.

If you are still getting heating then you might have an issue with a relay in the heat pump.

Your thermostat might need to be cleaned or calibrated. This is what I check first. This link is a troubleshooting guide.

make sure the wires are not touching in the thermostat, if they are not then I would say the relay is fried
it sounds to me the relay for the heat isnt dropping out this can be checked bt removing the white wire at the the stat and placing a jumper acrossr and y if the heat comes on still there is a relay issue
you should be able to fix this at the thermostat providing your wired correctly at the other end.pull the heat wire off and try again.you have a red power supply,a fan wire, a cool wire, a heat wire and for a heat pump probably a couple more.
either you have a short on low voltage red or yellow to emergancy heat or sequenser is stuck
sounds like you have a sequencer energizing when it shouldn't,check your low volt wires in the heat panel make sure they are secure and not touching, also check to see if you have contactors instead of sequencers, one may be stuck in the open position causing it to stay on,what ever it is will be in the area where all the wiring is for the heat system, make sure you don't have any low volt wires touching
