How do I change the thermostat in my 2001 chevy silverado?

Follow the (big) upper radiator hose to the engine.

Use a half inch socket and ratchet and remove the two bolts holing the housing to the intake manifold.

Lift it up.

Pry the thermostat out of the manifold.

*Note the spring goes downward.

Put the new thermostat in.

put the gasket over the thermostat.

Put the housing back on.

Refill your radiator.

Exactly how depends on which engine is in yours. The thermostat on a Silverado is not a separate part but a complete housing including the water outlet that bolts to the front of the engine. Remove the air filter assembly and inlet for access. Remove the water hose. Remove the two bolts holding the housing to the block It usually lifts right off but it might be stuck to the block because there is an O ring that sometimes sticks to the block and housing. Just pull it off. install a new o ring reinstall the bolts and the hose.
